Tea was introduced to England from China in the middle of the 17th century. Although there are earlier references of its use by traders in China, it was not until 1657 that we have the first account of its sale in England. Tea Caddies were kept by the wealthy to store their tea. The tea caddies were lined with zinc to help keep the tea fresh. The tea caddies had a lock and key to stop temptation from the maids prying hands. The key was often kept hung from a chain around the owner’s waist. Tea caddies reflected their owners wealth and status.
