Roman Villa – The Getty Villa

The magnificent Getty Villa in Malibu California is a recreation of a classic Roman Villa. It is a treasure trove of antiquity in a villa modelled on the Roman Villa dei Papiri in the Bay of Naples that was buried by an eruption of Mount Vesuvias in AD 79.

(Looking down the main garden of the Getty Roman Villa with large pond and various bronze fountains)

The Getty Villa is one of two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum and houses oil tycoon Getty’s vase collection of Greek and Roman antiquities and aretefacts. The collection has 44,000 Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities dating from 6,500 BC to 400 AD. It’s definitely well worth a visit in the area and Canonbury Antiques really enjoyed our recent afternoon spent there.

(The Malbury Hall Zeus – also referred to as Jupiter )
The Roman Villa at the time of the height of the Roman Emperor would be a space for wealthy Romans to display their art collections in lovely surroundings. Marble sculptures, busts, mosaics, bronze fountains and urns, statues, frescoes and tiled mosaics would be on display. The main courtyard of the Getty Roman Villa features various bronze statues – mainly replicas – dotted amongst the gardens and fountains in the canyon that heads inland from the Pacific Ocean and it makes for a charming stroll. The topiary and flowers really brings out the asethetics of the statues and sculptures, which is exactly the purpose of the Roman Villa working as kind of ancient country retreat.

Besides the Roman Villa are larger rooms housing the collections authentic Greek and Roman works of art including one of my favourites, a large marble sculpture of Jupiter (or Zeus). This impressive work was first documented in the 1570s at Tivoli near Rome where the statue originally decorated the gardens of Villa d’Este. This piece was also in the collection at Marbury Hall in England after which it was purchased by Getty. In fact the trend in the 1700 and 1800s for collecting Roman and Greek antiquity was very popular in England after the discovery of the ruins at Palmrya (sadly now largely destroyd by Isis). It became in vogue for rich aristocrats and businesmen to collect statues and art from the ancient world for display in the their country houses and gardens. Collectors like William Petty-Fitzmaurice (1st Marquess of Lansdowne) and Thomas Bruce (7th Earl of Elgin) had large collections. Elgin served as a British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire and amassed a large collection of Greek antiquities, the most famous probabaly being the Elgin Marbles whch came from the Parthenon in Athens and ended up in the British Museum.

Extending Victorian Dining Tables

At Canonbury Antiques we carry a large range of extending Victorian dining tables. These large dining tables are perfect for hosting bigger dinner parties and large functions as they can extend to accomodate more guests when the occasion arises.

They work of the leaf system – smaller sections of wood (normally 24 inches wide) – can be slotted into the table as it expands. Some of the bigger extending Victorian dining tables can have 2-3 extra leaves so you make the table bigger by six feet (182CM) if required.

Frequently the extending Victorian dining tables will work off a system where you extend the table via a wind up mechanism, normally a handle at one end which you turn and the table expands. As it gets bigger you can drop the extra leaves in – or take them out when you don’t need to use them, for everday use for example. It really is the ideal set up for home dining.

( Large range of extending Victorian dining tables )

Of course, if you are looking for matching chairs for your large extending Victorian dining table then you’ve found the right people. We specialise in supplying large dining sets with complete chairs. Some of our most popular dining chairs include Chippendale, Victorian balloon backRegency, William IV, Queen Anne etc in both walnut and mahogany and will make a perfect match to your extending Victorian dining table. Many of these pieces are on display in the Canonbury Antiques North London showroom, nothing beats trying them out for size and comfort ahead of getting them into your home. On certain jobs we can offer a ‘try before you buy’ service where we can turn up at your house with the table and chairs and you try it out in the comfort of your own home.

Classically, these extending Victorian dining tables come in mahogany with D shaped ends and very bulbous hand turned chunky legs. It’s definitely a chunkier, more solid look than their Regency cousins. Regency dining tables are less heavy and work of a pedestal system – they also work of an extending leaf system. Again we can offer various chair and table combinations so come and see us to try them out. Please call or email ahead of your visit as some of our goods are in storage – we just don’t have the size to store everything on site.

We can also ship these extending Victorian dining tables to anywhere in the world so please get in touch for a shipping quote.  If you cannot find the right piece of table on the website let us know and we will do our best to source it for you. We also offer discounts for interior designers so please get in touch and let us know what you are looking for. Alongside this we also specialise in art deco furniture, bronzes, porcelain, architectural antiques, continental antiques and all things interiors. We’ve been in business since the 1960s and our current showroom in Hertfordshire is just 25 minutes north of London.

Another popular type of extending dining table is the Jupes table which extends outwards via a system of concentric leaves. Again, the perfect piece for larger dinner parties and family gatherings such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. For interior designers looking for that perfect extending Victorian dining table, our North London antiques showroom is conveniently located in the Hertfordshire countryside – just 25 minutes north of London. We used to have showrooms in London but around fifteen years ago we took the decision to move out of central London so we could have more space and of course most of the business had by then moved online. American Presidents Desk Mahogany Partners Desk White House

You are viewing a totally unique large Presidents Resolute desk hand carved from the finest mahogany. I hope the photos do this stunning work of art some justice, it is certainly better in the flesh. This is the same desk that the President has in the Oval Office in the White House.
This piece is a model of a desk that was given to the President of the United States by the Queen of England in 1855 – please see the commemorative plaque that is located at the back of the desk and you can get a history of the piece. You can blow the picture up and read the interesting inscription.
The desk is beautiful – you can see how intricate the hand carved details are including the large eagle with the shield, snake, leaves and arrows to the back panel in the knee hole. The back panel opens out. Then there are the host of other intricate designs weaved into the desk, including rosettes, leaves, flowers, scrolls, swags and other emblems. This is a true partners desk as both sides feature an open out cubby hole with lock and various drawers. The table top is large and covered in tooled leather with gilded circumference. This would make a great piece for your office, home or otherwise, and is a great conversation piece as well as of course looking totally the part.
The desk is offered in very good condition ready for home use right away and we will ship to anywhere in the world. We bought this from a dealer in Bolton after it had been bought from a local business where it had stood for many years.

Whatnot – Bookcase

At Canonbury Antiques we carry a range of whatnots. What? A whatnot is a stand or bookshelf with shelves used for housing and storing small objects, books and decorative items. Kind of like a bookcase.

( Whatnots – Antique Bookcases )

The eytomology of the word whatnot is interesting. From the dictionary: used to refer to an item or items that are not identified but are felt to have something in common with items already named. Hence, in Victorian times, when the whatnot as a piece of furniture first came into existence it got it’s name from the pieces it used to store – all the whatnots. The flotsam and jetsam of living rooms – books, vases, trinkets, busts, sculptures etc.

(Victorian Walnut Whatnot Bookcase Barley Twist 1860 )

We have various styles of whatnots including Victorian and Edwardian and carry them in various woods including mahogany and walnut. What Desk Is Donald Trump Using

Like his predecessor Barack Obmama, President Donald Trump uses a Resolute desk for his work in the Oval Office at the White House.

( Resolute Desk – Mahogany Partners Desk )

The Resolute desk is a mahogany partners desk – sometimes referred to as the Presidents desk – and naturally at Canonbury Antiques we carry a gorgeous replica of this fine piece of American history.

( The President – at his Presidents Desk )

This double pedestal partners’ desk, usually called the “Resolute desk“, was made from the oak timbers of the British ship H.M.S. Resolute as a gift to President Rutherford B. Hayes from Queen Victoria in 1880. It has been used by every president since Hayes, excepting Presidents Johnson, Nixon, and Ford, 1964-1977. Interesting fact –  Franklin Roosevelt requested the addition of a door with the presidential seal to conceal his leg braces.

HMS Resolute was a mid-19th Century ship which was part of the British Royal Navy and was specifically used for Arctic exploration. HMS Resolute became trapped in ice whilst exploring and was abandoned in 1854. The ship was then subsequently recovered by an American whaler and returned to Queen Victoria in England in 1856. Timbers from the ship were then used to construct the first Resolute Desk which was then presented to the President of the United State and was located in the White House Oval Office.

It’s such a great story and the desk can be seen to symbolise the long and enduring relationship between Britain and the United States. Similarly the story of the desks construction and fabrication – that it was rescued from an abandoned ship and then salvaged to be eventually made into the classic Resolute Desk again symbolised the enduring nature of both the desk and the special relationship.

The Resolute Desk – or Presidents desk as it is often referred to – that Canonbury Antiques has is an exact replica of the desk in the White House. It’s made from mahogany and is a true partners desk (ie people can sit either side of the desk) and features a commemorative plaque on the back. Some of the older versions even had a secret compartment for all those top secret documents:

The Resolute Desk can be viewed in the Canonbury Antiques Hertfordshire showroom – which is well located just 25 minutes north of London so please get in touch for an appointment. We can also ship these Resolute Presidents desks to anywhere in the world – including of course the United States – so please also get in touch if you would like a shipping quote.

Aside from the Resolute Desk, other desks used in the White House include the Theodore Roosevelt desk, Hoover desk and Johnson desk – theResolute Desk remains the most popular by far and for good reason – it’s an enduring design classic, comfortable to sit and work at and has a wonderful story behind it.
