The range of antique French furniture at The Getty museum in Los Angeles is amazing. You can really appreciate the time when furniture and cabinet making was considered to be part of the arts and famous cabinet makers were lauded and patronised by kings and Royalty. The Regence style is particularly prevalent at The Getty and they even have whole rooms in the Regence style so you can imagine you are in a room at the Palace of Versailles.
These works of art are priceless and have such amazing provenance they can be traced back to original ownership by French Kings in pre-Revolutionary France. The pieces are also attributed to certain cabinet makers of the day such as Jean Francois Oeben, Andre Charles Boulle, Phillipp-Claude Montigny, Adam Weisweiler, Joseph Baumhauer, Gilles Joubert who would have stamped their creations.

We spent a lovely day at Los Angeles’ Getty Museum – if you are ever in LA it’s definitely worth a visit for it’s eclectic collection of art and furniture in the most amazing setting with stunning views over the sprawling metropolis. If you are a fan of Boulle furniture then the Getty’s collection is incredible. These works of art are priceless – pieces like this just don’t come onto the market. Andre Charles Boulle worked out of Paris (1642 – 1732) and practiced a very distinctive form of inlay using walnut veneered with brass, pewter, horn, tortoiseshell and various woods.
We took some photos of the Boulle furniture but of course you’re not allowed to use a flash in the museum so we did the best we could under the conditions.
