You are viewing an exquisite bronze casting of ”Friends Forever’ (or ‘Eternal Friends’) by DH Chiparus – also know as Eternal Friends. I hope the photos go some way in conveying the beauty to this piece, it’s certainly better in the flesh. Chiparus was one of the most famous sculptors associated with the art deco movement and this is a later recasting of one of his best works. Please note, this is at our US office which is where it will ship from, which is good news for US customers as it’s a heavy piece and not so far to travel.
True to the art deco aesthetic, the piece has a wonderful symmetry and balance. The two borzoi dogs stand either side of the young lady clad in typical 20s attire. The piece has been cast from polychrome bronze so each section has different colours, silver for the dogs, red for her dress, brown for her face. The piece in turn stands on a black tiered marble base which is signed at the back, please see close up photo.
This is offered in perfect condition ready for home use right away and we will ship this to anywhere in the world.
Chiparus: Born in Romania and lived in Paris studying under A Boucher and J. Boucher. He exhibited at the salon from 1914. His later works in the 1920s were influenced by the interest in Egypt after the excavation of the Pharoahs’ tombs. He based many works on the ballet and the theatre, one particular theme being the Ballet Russe, from which resulted the Russian Dancers.
You are viewing a gorgeous silvered bronze casting depicting an art deco figurine holding a hoop aloft. The piece is signed ‘Charles’ on the base and this is a piece by Charles Skyes. Sykes is perhaps most famous for coming up with the Rolls Royce ‘Spirit of Ecstacy’ emblem which stood on the hood / bonnet of the car. That was also a silvered bronze. This is a recast from the original and is offered in great shape.
The piece we have here is an almost archetypal example of a the 1920s idealised female form and art deco aesethetic. The lithe female wears a figure hugging cress which fans out via her pleats. She holds her arms aloft to hold up the hoop and she has her head back seductively.
The quality to the casting is incredible as I hope the photos illustrate. She stands firmly on the black tiered marble base which has been polished and is smooth to touch. We bought this piece from a dealer in London’s Camden Passage.

Charles Sykes was a sculpturist working out of early 19th Century England whose most famous work is the ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’ as adorned on the bonnet of Rolls Royce cars. Also known as the ‘Flying Lady’ in the United States. Skyes was a graduate of the Royal College of Arts and was commissioned by Claude Johnson, then managing director of Rolls Royce, to create the piece to emobdy the spirit and gracefulness of the great car.
This is certainly the most attractive and probably the best known motor car mascot in the world, she has adorned the radiators of Rolls-Royce motor cars since 1911 and concealed a hidden passion as there is a great story behind her creation. This marvellous mascot was modelled after a woman who had bewitching beauty, intellect and esprit – but not the social status which might have permitted her to marry the man with whom she had fallen in love.
This is the story of Eleanor Velasco Thornton, whose liaison with John Walter Edward-Scott-Montagu (after 1905 the second Lord Montagu of Beaulieu) was to remain a secret for a decade or more, principally because both partners acted with the utmost discretion. John Scott, heir to his father\’s title, was a pioneer of automobilism in England. From 1902 he was editor of the illustrated magazine The Car. Eleanor V Thornton was employed as his secretary. Friends of the pair knew of their close relationship but they were sufficiently understanding as to overlook it.
Sykes also created other art deco pieces such as the ‘Hoop Lady’ and other works, although of course the ‘Spirit of Ecstasy is his most famous.
