Thomas Sheraton – English Sheraton Möbel

Thomas Sheraton (1751-1806) war ein englischer Möbeldesigner und Baptistenprediger, in Stockton-on-Tees geboren. Er scheint sich in der Nähe von Armut sein ganzes Leben lang gelebt haben. Um 1790 begann er in London als Möbeldesigner und Lehrer der Zeichnung zu arbeiten. Keine Möbel von seiner eigenen Hand identifiziert worden ist; seinen Ruf beruht hauptsächlich auf der Tischler und Polsterer’s Drawing Book, (1793-1794), einen praktischen Leitfaden für Tischler und ihre Kunden, resümiert der raffinierten englischen Neo-Klassik Geschmack den 1790er Jahren. Es dauerte viel zu verbreiten, was bekannt geworden ist, wie das Sheraton-Stil, nicht nur in Großbritannien sondern in ganz Europa und in Nordamerika.

Sheraton Möbel zeichnet sich durch seine sorgfältige, geradlinigen Proportionen und feine Verarbeitung aus. Stühle mit überwiegend geraden Schienen und kleine dekorative Tabletten in den Rücken sind typisch; Sitze sind großzügig tiefen Polster gegeben, während die Beine sind konisch, gerade oder gedreht: keine cabriole zu sehen ist. Cabinet Stücke haben abgerundete Ecken, konvexen oder konkaven Formen, mit Pilastern und Flöten. Mechanische Vorrichtungen und Jalousien waren sehr begünstigt und so wurden in Seide-Girlanden und Girlanden für Betten, und in Falten hinter den Glastüren der Schränke. Mahagoni, Satinholz und andere fein gemustert Laubhölzer verwendet wurden; Intarsien Dekoration ist zurückhaltend, manchmal weicht gemalten Blumen oder klassische Themen der üppigsten Stücke.
