You are viewing a gorgeous Italian bronze casting of Mercury – the messenger of the Gods in Roman mythology. The piece stands in at 4.5 feet tall so he’s quite a large statue – a perfect collection to any interior.

He stands on the face of a head and this is obviously relevant to the myth. The patina is wonderful and this is offered in great shape ready for home dispaly right away.

Mercury (mythology), in Roman mythology, messenger of the gods, the son of the god Jupiter and of Maia, the daughter of the Titan Atlas. Mercury was also the god of merchants and of trading and shared many of the attributes of the Greek god Hermes. The worship of Mercury was introduced into Rome in 495 bc when a temple was dedicated to him near the Circus Maximus. His festival was celebrated on May 15.

He was well known as the “Conductor of Souls” and was qualified to control the souls of the dead and guide them to Hades, the underworld. He is depicted in mythological art wearing a broad-beamed hat and the sandals of a traveler, with wings attached to both, and his magic wand in his hand.

You are viewing a gorgeous French bronze of a Roman Gladiator by the French sculpturist Albert Carrier (1824-1887).  I hope the photos do this stunning piece some justice, it’s certainly better in the flesh and would make for a great addition to any home interiors scheme.

The quality to the casting is superb. Check out details like the folds in his drape, the plummage and the texture to his dress. The patina is also wonderful and this sits on a marble base. The artist has really caught the poise and beauty of the soldiers pose with great skill.

We bought this from a dealer in Les Halles, Paris whilst on a recent French buying trip and he is offered in very good condition. We will ship to anywhere in the world.

Bronze Roman Gladiator Warrior Signed Gardet

 

You are viewing a bronze study depicting what is believed to be a Roman foot soldier. This superb Sculpture is signed by Georges Gardet (1863 – 1939) who was born in Paris, France on October 11th 1863. He was a highly talented sculptor whose early studies were with his sculptor father, Joseph, and Aime Millet.  He was influenced early in his career by the works of Emmanuel Fremiet whom Gardet studied under at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.  Big game animals fascinated Gardet and his detailed treatment of these subjects is reflected in this interest. His fascination with animals was not limited to just the large wild ones as he did a number of small works of domestic animals and even a few private commissions of “pets” also.  Occasional glimpses of the late Barye’s influence are found in the treatment of his combat groups as can be seen in this bronze.

The sculpture for sale here is of a warrior with shield and sword and traditional armour, apparently Gardet did a series of these in 1922 for an exhibition. A truly superb piece for the decorator dealer or discerning individual. Good luck!
