Art Deco Bisque Porcelain Lady

This is a charming German Art Deco bisque ornament depicting a lady laying in her bed. The lady has a beautiful matte skin finish typical of bisque pottery. The bed cover has the slogan ‘Where is the flea?’ etched into the china. When the ornament is turned over you can see the ladies behind and her stockings. This piece is offered to you in great condition.

Length of lady 13.5cm Height 7.5cm

Bisque porcelain is characterized by its matte finish, when applied to a doll it gives it a skin like appearance. Bisque porcelain is collectible, and antique bisque dolls for example can be worth thousands. Antique German and French bisque from the 19th century were often made as children’s playthings. Today antique bisque porcelain is still widely collected. Bisque porcelain price is affected by age, maker, condition, and completeness.

A beautiful porcelain Art Deco pin lady & gentleman. The couple are dancing with their faces held close together. A wonderful subject. The pin doll is offered in great condition.

Dimensions; 13cm x 11cm

Pin cushions, or pin dolls, only became a true necessity once sewing implements were mass produced during the middle of the 19th century. The crudely made pins and needles used before the Industrial Revolution were costly and typically stored in small boxes and cases. While pin pillows and un-mounted cushions emerged in 15th-century England, it wasn’t until pins were widely affordable during the 1800s that cushions were commonly sold as trinkets or commemorative gifts.

You are viewing an exquisite bronze casting of ‘Friends Forever’ (or ‘Eternal Friends’) by DH Chiparus – also know as Eternal Friends. I hope the photos go some way in conveying the beauty to this piece, it’s certainly better in the flesh. Chiparus was one of the most famous sculptors associated with the art deco movement and this is a later recasting of one of his best works. Please note, this is at our US office which is where it will ship from, which is good news for US customers as it’s a heavy piece and not so far to travel.

True to the art deco aesthetic, the piece has a wonderful symmetry and balance. The two borzoi dogs stand either side of the young lady clad in typical 20s attire. The piece has been cast from polychrome bronze so each section has different colours, silver for the dogs, red for her dress, brown for her face. The piece in turn stands on a black tiered marble base which is signed at the back, please see close up photo.

This is offered in perfect condition ready for home use right away and we will ship this to anywhere in the world.

Chiparus: Born in Romania and lived in Paris studying under A Boucher and J. Boucher. He exhibited at the salon from 1914. His later works in the 1920s were influenced by the interest in Egypt after the excavation of the Pharoahs’ tombes. He based many works on the ballet and the theatre, one particular theme being the Ballet Russe, from which resulted the Russian Dancers.
