Antique French Furniture & Commodes @ The Getty

Click here to view our range of French furniture and commodes on Canonbury Antiques >>>

The range of antique French furniture at The Getty museum in Los Angeles is amazing. You can really appreciate the time when furniture and cabinet making was considered to be part of the arts and famous cabinet makers were lauded and patronised by kings and Royalty. The Regence style is particularly prevalent at The Getty and they even have whole rooms in the Regence style so you can imagine you are in a room at the Palace of Versailles.

These works of art are priceless and have such amazing provenance they can be traced back to original ownership by French Kings in pre-Revolutionary France. The pieces are also attributed to certain cabinet makers of the day such as Jean Francois Oeben, Andre Charles Boulle, Phillipp-Claude Montigny, Adam Weisweiler, Joseph Baumhauer, Gilles Joubert who would have stamped their creations.

Boulle Furniture @ The Getty, Los Angeles

Click here to view our range of Boulle style furniture on Canonbury Antiques >>

We spent a lovely day at Los Angeles’ Getty Museum – if you are ever in LA it’s definitely worth a visit for it’s eclectic collection of art and furniture in the most amazing setting with stunning views over the sprawling metropolis. If you are a fan of Boulle furniture then the Getty’s collection is incredible. These works of art are priceless – pieces like this just don’t come onto the market. Andre Charles Boulle worked out of Paris (1642 – 1732) and practiced a very distinctive form of inlay using walnut veneered with brass, pewter, horn, tortoiseshell and various woods.

We took some photos of the Boulle furniture but of course you’re not allowed to use a flash in the museum so we did the best we could under the conditions.

Antique Bronzes @ The Getty Museum, Los Angeles

To view our range of bronzes please click here >>

The Getty in Los Angeles just has to be my favourite museum in the world. The size is just perfect – not overwhelming like The Louvre – it’s just the right space for a lovely day out. It’s spread out across five buildings each dedicated to a period from Classical Antiquity to modern art – an asthetes paradise. I was particularly impressed with the classical bronze section – mainly Italian bronzes of classical themes and Roman myth. I took a few photos – of course you are not allowed to use a flash in the gallery so some of the lighting isn’t up to scratch but you get an idea.

RIP Margaret Thatcher

Canonbury Antiques would like to mark the sad passing of Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first female Prime Minister. Thatcher’s constituency was Finchley in North London, close to where our showroom is currently located. Indeed Martin Worster, MD of Canonbury Antiques, was lucky enough to meet the Iron Lady on numerous occassions throughout the 80s and 90s via his work with the Conservative Party.

Image

We’ve included a number of photos of Martin Worster at an Antiques Roadshow event in North London with Lady Thatcher. We date the photos to the early 90s. Mrs Thatcher looks delighted as Martin shares his expert knowledge on antiques that local inhabitants had brought in to be evaluated. The event was a major success.

Looking at the photos you can see one where the factory stamp on a porcelain plate is being identified, another shows a bronze cherub statue being dated and in the last photo Martin is describing a trinket box. Thatcher’s expression in this photo is priceless.

Thatcher was Britain’s longest-serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century and a lady of formidable intellect, drive and talent. Rest In Peace Maggie.
