Antique Bronzes @ The Getty Museum, Los Angeles

To view our range of bronzes please click here >>

The Getty in Los Angeles just has to be my favourite museum in the world. The size is just perfect – not overwhelming like The Louvre – it’s just the right space for a lovely day out. It’s spread out across five buildings each dedicated to a period from Classical Antiquity to modern art – an asthetes paradise. I was particularly impressed with the classical bronze section – mainly Italian bronzes of classical themes and Roman myth. I took a few photos – of course you are not allowed to use a flash in the gallery so some of the lighting isn’t up to scratch but you get an idea.

Bronze Casting Of Apollo Figurine Bronzes Classical

Bronze Casting Of Apollo Figurine Bronzes Classical

You are viewing an impressive bronze casting depicting the son of Zeus in Greek mythology, Apollo. Apollo is depicted wearing a tunic round his body and his trademark garland of flowers in his hair.

The piece is cast from the finest brown bronze which has a lovely patina to it. The piece sits on a square tiered base of black streaked marble. There is bronze beaded braiding to the top of the marble. This would be a great decorative item for your home and as it is offered in perfect condition it is ready for home use right away.

Apollo, in Greek mythology, son of the god Zeus and Leto, daughter of a Titan. He was also called Delian, after Delos, the island of his birth, and Pythian, after his killing of Python, the fabled serpent that guarded a shrine on the mountains of Parnassus. In Homeric legend Apollo was primarily a god of prophecy. His most important oracle was at Delphi, the site of his victory over the Python. He sometimes gave the gift of prophecy to mortals whom he loved, such as the Trojan princess Cassandra.

Apollo was a gifted musician, who delighted the gods with his performance on the lyre. He was also a master archer and a fleet-footed athlete, credited with having been the first victor in the Olympic games. His twin sister, Artemis, was the guardian of young women, and Apollo was the special protector of young men. He was also the god of agriculture and cattle, and of light and truth. He taught humans the art of healing.

Some tales depict Apollo as pitiless and cruel. According to the Iliad by Homer, Apollo answered the prayers of the priest Chryses to obtain the release of his daughter from the Greek general Agamemnon by shooting fiery, pestilence-carrying arrows into the Greek army. He also abducted and ravished the young Athenian princess Creusa and abandoned her and the child born to them. Perhaps because of his physical beauty, Apollo was represented in ancient art more frequently than any other deity.

The making of bronzes is a complicated process and this can lead to the high cost of some bronzes but it is something to be appreciated and as an item will retain its value. The entire process of making a bronze can take anywhere from six weeks to four months to produce a single piece.

As you can see, each bronze is truly unique because of the hands on labor that is involved, even if it is one of an edition. The sculpture is a result of a marriagebetween the artist and the foundry. This ancient process produces a bronze sculpture that will last for generations to come. What a treasure!

This piece has been made using the lost wax technique. The original model would have been made using clay or plaster. Over this a thin layer of wax would have been covered and then around this more clay. This would then be put in the oven and the wax would melt creating the space for the molten bronze to be poured into, once this had set the clay could be broken away and you would be left with the bronze casting. Hence the wax is lost in the process. It’s is the oldest and most timely method of creating bronze sculptures and figurines.

Pair Bronze Gregoire Candelabras French Lights Signed

Pair Bronze Gregoire Candelabras French Lights Signed

You are viewing a gorgeous pair of French female figurines in the form of torcheres or lights – they really remind me of the great Statue of Liberty, the gift from France to the United States. They are a perfect left and right and each maiden holds aloft the light. The casting on this pair is amazing as I hope the photos illustrate, the patina has a lovely dark brown finish.

The piece is signed L Gregoire on the base near the foot (please see close up picture). Jean Louis Gregoire was a famous French sculptor who lived 1840-1890 and these have to be one of his famous works. Each figure holds aloft the frosted crystal glass flames from which the light emits. They come pre-wired so it would be easy to hook these up to a light source.

The features of the figures has been expertely sculpted and these would make for a fine addition to any interiors scheme. Check out details like the sea serpent on the base of one of them, plus their fine features and intricately textured hair. They are both offered in perfect condition ready for home use right away. We bought these from a dealer in Paris whilst on a continental buying trip.
