English Bronze Polo Player Horse Jockey Statue

English Bronze Polo Player Horse Jockey Statue

You are viewing a fine English bronze casting depicting a polo player in full swing astride his horse. The energy and dynamism of the piece is what attracted us to this great work of art. We came across this at a dealer we know in Bath whilst on a buying trip in the West Country.

The player is depicted swinging his stick just about to hit the ball with the horse at a mild cantor. We cannot find a signature to the piece but whoever the artist was has really caught the moment with skill. The patina to the bronze has a lovely lustre and at different parts the tone varies. The piece is offered in perfect condition and sits squarely on a oval marble base. It is ready for home decorative use right away and this will take centre stage as a show piece. Perfect for polo fans and collectors.

Polo can be traced to origins in Manipur state, India, about 300 bc when it was played as Sagol Kangjei. It is also claimed to be of Persian origin having been played as Pulu (which means “willow root”) about 525 bc. In the course of centuries it spread to other countries including Tibet, China, India, and Japan, where a special form of it called dakyu evolved in the 8th century ad. By the 16th century it had become particularly popular in India. During the 1850s British army officers in India learnt how to play it, and the earliest polo club of the modern era was the Cachar Club, founded in Assam in 1859. It was first played in England in 1869 by cavalry officers of the Tenth Hussars, and in the United States in 1876. The governing body is the Hurlingham Polo Association, London. Hurlingham first staged a match in 1874 and the club committee first drew up a set of British rules in 1875.

English Bronze Labrador Dog Statue Labs Dogs

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS ENGLISH BRONZE LABRADOR DOG STATUE LABS DOGS ON CANONBURY ANTIQUES

English Bronze Labrador Dog Statue Labs Dogs

English Bronze Labrador Dog Statue Labs Dogs

You are viewing and absolutely lovely English bronze sculpture of a labrador retriever dog. The dog is almost lifesize and is depicted sitting attentively and patiently as labradors are reknowned for.

We cannot find a signature on the piece but believe it to be by an artist of merit due to the manner in which the musceltone has been captured, plus the small details like the etched hairs of the dog. Its a gorgeous piece and perfect for all dog owners, especially Labrador owners everywhere. The patina to the bronze is a lovely nutty brown.

It is on a bronze base and is thus self-standing, it could live outside (perhaps with the base concreted down) as a gate post or guard dog outside. It will not rust as it is bronze.

The Labrador Retriever is a breed of sporting dog, originally trained to discover and fetch killed or wounded game, principally aquatic birds or pheasants. The breed originated in Newfoundland, Canada, and was imported into England early in the 19th century.

Being bronze this will last forever without rusting and hence is a great investment as it will always appreciate in value. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing and nice to look at they can also become heirlooms.

Bronze is any of several alloys consisting mainly of copper and tin. Neither ancient nor modern bronzes consist only of these two metals. Zinc, lead, and silver were added to bronze alloys by Greek and Roman founders for use in tools, weapons, coins, and objects of art. Zinc, lead, and other metals are occasionally present in modern bronze.

PAIR ENGLISH LIFESIZE BRONZE LIONS LANDSEER LION

PAIR ENGLISH LIFESIZE BRONZE LIONS LANDSEER LION

You are viewing an impressive pair of nearly lifesize English bronze lions. I hope the photos do this stunning pair some justice, they’re certainly more impressive in the flesh. The lions remind us of the famous ones found in Trafalgar square by Edward Landseer. The casting is of the highest quality and the patina to the bronze has a lovely dark nutty brown finish to it. Details like the mane are particularly worthy of detail, as the lions locks flow. The face is also very expressionistic and the artist has really caught the creatures character and power with skill. These would make a great decorative piece for your home or garden. Being bronze these would of course be able to live outside with no fear of rusting and would make excellent gatekeepers either side of your driveway or entrance. They are both offered in perfect condition ready for use right away. We bought these from an architectural salvage firm in Islington, North London.
