My new (well 3 years old) flat screen LCD Toshiba TV now shows lines on the screen. What happened there? It’s not as if I went for the cheapest brand either. I will have to trade it in and get a new one. That’s probably the shelf life of mass produced consumer durables – 3-5 years. Cheap plastic goods probably put together by mechanical robots in a large factory.
Which is why I am proud we sell the type of goods we sell. Hand made by skilled craft and tradesman to centuries old traditions in workshops in England. I am probably particularly talking about our table and chair sets – they just reek of quality and hark back to an older era where guilds of craftsman would lovingly make all goods. A time when consumer durables were just that – durable. In fact so durable items made 400 years ago are still around today and command vase prices exactly because of that.
